Baccarat is a very popular card game which is played all over the world. Over the centuries several modified variations have developed. The basic rules of all the variations are the same but every variation features some additional rules or allow players to place additional bets. The four main variations of the game are chemin de fer, punto banco, baccarat banque and mini baccarat.
Baccarat Chemin de Fer
Chemin der Fer is mostly played in France where it has its historical routes. Although the basic rules are the same as the in the classic variation of baccarat, there are some major differences. In most cases, the game is played with six decks and the cards are dealt face down. The biggest difference in this variation of baccarat is, that players can take turns to be the banker. This means, the players compete against each other and not the dealer. Usually, the banker sets aside a particular amount of money he/she is willing to risk. Each gambler can now place their stakes until they reach the amount the banker has staked. Should the total amount of the stakes be higher than the stake of the banker, the banker may decline the bet. Each player is also allowed to announce “Banco”, which means that they are willing to match the banker’s stake.
The actual play starts when the croupier deals the cards and the gambler who has placed the highest stake is chosen to represent the rest of the players. When cards are dealt, both, the dealer and the banker, check their cards in order to see if their total is 8 or 9. If the value of their cards is 8 or 9, they need to turn their cards.
Baccarat Punto Banco
Punto Banco is probably the most played version and therefore it can be found in the vast majority of online casinos. This is also the classic version of the game and is played using six standard decks of 52 cards. As the course of the game is predetermined by precise rules, the game purely depends on luck. Players can decide to either bet on the player, the banker or on a tie. Once players have chosen their wager, the cards are dealt and their values are estimated in order to determine whether a third card will be dealt.
Baccarat Banque is one of the oldest variations of baccarat and is very similar to chemin de fer. As it was predominantly played in France it is not as popular as punto banco and is only played in some European casinos. The biggest difference to chemin de fer is, that one of the players, usually the first player to join the game or the one with the highest stake, will play the role of the banker for the whole game.
The game is mostly played with three standard decks. Once all gamblers have placed their bets the dealer reshuffles the cards and starts dealing them. The banker deals one card on the right side of the player, one card on the left side of the player and one to the bank. The player can then decide to place his/her bet either on the left hand or the right hand or on both of them. It is important to note that players cannot bet on the hand of the bank, as this option is only available to the player who is dealing the cards.
As suggested by the name, this is a mini version of the game where only 7 players can attend and the game is played on a smaller table than compared to other versions of the game. Mini baccarat enjoys a massive following from baccarat followers as it is a lower-stakes version of the classic card game and therefore a great option for gamblers with a smaller budget. Moreover, it is played with only one croupier acting as both, the dealer and the banker. Mini baccarat is generally played at a faster pace and 8 standard decks are used.
